Montreal, Quebec: Real-Time Parking Guidance System, Directed Enforcement, and Utilization Analytics in Northern Climate
Real-Time Parking Guidance System, Directed Enforcement, and Utilization Analytics in Northern Climate

Montréal, Québec at a Glance
Location: Montréal, Québec
Status: Historical Pilot, 2014 to 2017
Deployment: 200 in-ground on-street sensors
Customer: Stationnement de Montréal (Montréal Parking Authority)
Applications: Real-time parking guidance system, directed enforcement, and utilization analytics
The Challenge
Stationnement de Montréal wanted real-time, space-level parking data for its central parking district, to better understand utilization, inform parking policy, support enforcement and help drivers find open spaces.
Montréal's climate made that a demanding environment. Sensors had to operate reliably through extended periods of extreme cold, snow cover and plowing, and the city's northern latitude limits winter daylight, which constrains solar-powered equipment.
The Deployment
Over a three-year pilot, Fybr operated 200 in-ground sensors and supporting gateways across the district, providing real-time occupancy data through multiple full winters.
What Fybr Learned
The Montréal pilot shaped how Fybr designs, deploys and manages its hardware for cold climates, including battery optimization, installation practices for freeze-thaw cycles and snow-plowing, and gateway power design. Those lessons carry into Fybr deployments today.
